PENNY, WHY BE A BUYERS AGENT?

I started in the Canberra real estate market as a selling agent about 17 years ago. Buyers do not have professional representation when purchasing and in my role, it was very easy to get buyers to add $20,000 or $30,000 to their offer when they didn’t actually need to. Over time, my role as a selling agent wasn’t sitting right with me and I decided that it was time to use my skill set to help buyers and provide them with a professional that was looking out for their needs.

WHY DO YOU THINK BUYERS NEED A BUYERS AGENT?

A buyer and a buyers agent are like milk and cookies. They are great on their own but when you put them together you get a far superior result. A buyers agent makes the process of buying real estate easy, quicker and more cost-effective over time. We can identify off-market properties and issues that you may not have seen on your own and provide assistance that means you don’t overpay for a property.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO OUTSIDE OF REAL ESTATE?

I feel the thing I do most is cook food for my always hungry teenager or drive him places but what I really love to do is a thing we call pub lunch Sundays. On a Sunday we drive an hour or two from Canberra and visit a local town for a pub lunch and wander around the town in the afternoon checking out the local sights and shops. That or a bit of off-road driving and camping in my truck near the ocean.

RED, WHITE, TEA OR COFFEE?

Um…Can I choose prosecco or blanc de blanc champagne….. peppermint tea sometimes, hot chocolate in winter but never coffee – although I love the smell of fresh coffee being brewed.

WHAT’S YOUR BEST HANGOVER CURE?

Great question! As a person in her mid 40’s hangovers tend to last a little longer and hit a bit harder now so they are few and far between but without a doubt, it’s two panadol and a glass of salty water right when I wake up followed by going back to sleep for about 30 minutes then a frosty fruit for the sugar hit to kickstart the day. A cheeky Maccas run makes the occasional appearance sometimes as well!

CAN YOU SHARE YOUR BEST TIP FOR REAL ESTATE BUYERS?

Do your research and buy well – smart floorplans will always win over odd layouts. Don’t be afraid to take your time in choosing a property but keep in mind the best time to buy was yesterday. You are almost always better off having a property that isn’t quite perfect rather than waiting 2 years to buy something that is ideal and missing out on the equity growth that would happen over the time you didn’t own it.

It’s such an emerging market in Australia and buyers are realising they need expert advice when making their biggest investment. I like that I can deliver that to our clients and help them make good decisions when they are buying property.

WHY DO YOU THINK BUYERS NEED A BUYERS AGENT?

To benefit from our local knowledge, to gain access to properties before they go to market and also because we take the pain out of dealing with multiple real estate agents across the whole gambit of trying to find properties, which in itself is a full-time job.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO DO OUTSIDE OF REAL ESTATE?

Play poker.

A well-made coffee is something to appreciate but after hours it’s going to be a whisky for me.

Trust your instincts they will usually steer you in the right direction, if it’s too good to be true it usually is.
